But seriously, since Brendan was good enough to post info warning of the dangers of ephedra/ephedrine use I thought I would pass along some info regarding dangerous side effects of another common over-the-counter drug family.
NSAIDS or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) naproxen (Naprosyn, Alleve), aspirin and many others. These medication work on pain by inhibiting prostaglandin formation thus reducing pain and swelling. The problem comes when these meds are taken when you are dehydrated as is often the case after a game or two. In a dehydrated state, the kidney's function slows way down to retain available fluid. To restart normal function the kidneys need prostaglandins. If you take even moderately high doses of NSAIDS while dehydrated, you can be at risk for ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE. If you need something to help with the post game aches and pains, and if you don't you didn't play hard enough, take Tylenol. Get yourself rehydrated first with large amounts of water before taking NSAIDS. Note that beer is not a good rehydrator. Drink it later. Being that Big Daddy Gil is a certified, trained health care professional and angel of mercy, I am available to answer any questions about medications. I'll probably answer most of them with Don't take that garbage you freakin mutant but that's life among High Country.
