(Marietta-AP) -- Life University, which lost its accreditation because of leadership problems, has decided to eliminate its competitive sports and divert money to its struggling academic program.

The cuts include Life
basketball, which has won three National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics men's championships, track, soccer, ice hockey and rugby. The
school expects to save one-point-eight (m) million a year. About 12 coaches and assistants will lose their jobs. Students attending Life on athletic scholarships will be allowed to continue their education through the end of
their academic contracts in March. Officials at Life, the nation's largest chiropractic school, hope the diverted money will help ward off faculty layoffs. The school has named an interim president, Michael Schmidt, who hopes to restore accreditation
