High Country Earns Homefield Advantage With Win Over Undefeated Huntsville RFC
Final: High Country 39 - Huntsville 27
March 29th, 2008, Atlanta, GA
On a day that was marked by many factors including: 3 or 4 lead changes, 66 total points were scored despite swirling winds, a half-hour lighting delay was endured, plenty of pretty tries were dotted down,a late SA sin-bining added to the drama and HCRFC managed to remain undefeated for the regular season (6-0-2) matrix. By closing out the with a 39-27 win over visiting Huntsville RFC, HCRFC secured home field advantage for the USA South Quarterfinals.
HCRFC jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on two converted tries. The initial try of the match was generated from stellar rucking and phased play capped off by a nicely weighted box kick from flyhalf Matt Hernandez taken at pace by fullback Garrett Smith. Benji Duffton scored the 2nd try of the match and then Huntsville RFC climbed back and took a 17-14 lead before HCRFC responded with continual pressure and a 2-man drive try off the base of the ruck which was scored by Reid Tankersley.
Second half tries were scored when the 8-man Reid intercepted a Huntsville Pass inside the their 22 and flipped a well timed pass to a bursting scrumhalf, Benji Duffton who after a brief loss of the ball in the try zone was downed by Troy Albright for the impressive try. The ultimate back-breaker came from Matt H. converting 5 of 7 kicks and a wonderfully timed interception and try by winger Matt Reynolds before the lightning delay.
With just 10 minutes left in the game, referee Scott Nickels called for a safety break from a possible lightening strike. During the 30 minutes of delay, Bad Mitch Long used the electrical storm to light both his chest and balls on fire. Later Mitch screamed at the sky and asked his maker “is this all you have?” He claimed later at The Brewhouse that being struck by lightning was equal to a two Red Bulls and a cigarette.
From a coaching standpoint, there was plenty to be proud of and plenty to have angst over. The passing in space by this current team is top notch and the rucking is good in spurts. The occasional tackling brain fart, defensive lapses and not covering kicks has continued to give our opponents a false sense of confidence that is sometimes undeserved. On Saturday though Huntsville RFC played a tough, gritty and intelligent game and were a very worthy opponent.
Gabe got married and Matt made out with Sharon.
